Our work in the communities

Community Relations / Social Performance is an integral part of the Newbury corporate strategy. Our

social performance thrust essentially and deliberately revolves around a sustainable relationship framework which is hinged upon our strategic community engagement plan. Our community relations ‘Modus Operandi’ is hinged on the respect for tradition, ethics, culture, and sacred beliefs of our hosts communities hence, we strive to contribute to the commonwealth of our host and operational communities.

The new model is community driven development and assisting with the right projects that will benefit them starts with honest conversations about what their needs are. No two communities are the same, so the aspect of contribution ensures ownership; they see themselves as stakeholders. This model has replaced the older supply model which did not involve the communities in deciding what projects would be most meaningful to them.

With carefully selected projects, we make a lasting contribution to local social and economic development. We identify important, long-term social topics and take these up in our efforts. This is always enforced in line with the country's tradition and development targets. Developing strong, trusting, and lasting relationships with our host communities, and recognizing and respecting people’s human rights and cultural heritage, are principles embedded in our business values, policies, and standards.

We aim to be a good neighbor across all our operations and build relationships that share benefits and secure community support for our work. We have strong processes for managing human rights risks. We pay particular attention to human rights issues – such as water resources, land access, resettlement, and security – that may be commonly associated with our activities.
